Paul Stine San Francisco 1969

On the 11th of October 1969 Zodiac would claim the life of yet another victim. Paul L Stine, 29 years of age. Paul was a Cab Driver, Zodiac had got into his cab asking to be dropped of at Washington and Cherry Street in Presidio Heights that night where he then shot Paul at close range to the back of the ear/head with a 9mm gun. Zodiac was seen rifling through the Cab Drivers Pockets as he lay slumped over in the cab, the young witnesses watched him wipe down the doors inside and out of the car to get rid of fingerprints, possibly with a white handkerchief. He then left the scene walking away nonchalant.

Police had got to the scene quickly and sent patrols out to look for the gunman. He would have been heavily blood stained and the police were sure they'd find him but somehow the police dispatcher got the description mixed up telling officers they were looking for a black male. As police officers searched the streets they came upon a Male Caucasian, 5 ft 10, 190 pounds, 35 - 45 yrs, crew cut, reddish blonde hair, eye glasses with plastic frames, parka jacket dark colour, dark brown trousers, dark shoes. He didn't appear to be in a hurry and had a semi limp head down, shuffled walk.

The one thing that really struck me about this description was how the suspect walked, the Policeman had said he walked with a shuffle, semi limp head down. In Attack 7 EAR/ONS case files a young witness mentions that the suspect had a distinctive gait, a little slouched or slightly bow legged. In Attack 39 witness also describes his gait had a scuffle to it.

There are several things to note in this crime such as the light colour hair, the general age range 35 - 45, other witness statement 25 - 35, Joseph J DeAngelo would have been 24 years of age. The nonchalant way he walked. Paul L Stine's wallet and cab keys were taken yet a pair of black leather style gloves were left behind, GSK would take i.d cards etc but would also leave behind small items of jewellery etc that came from other crime scenes. Why did he leave the gloves? had he worn them? The cutting of the victims shirt is also something Zodiac has in common with The Golden State Killer, he would rip towels and sometimes cut victims clothing off in pieces.

The phone calls and letters that Zodiac made to Law Enforcement and the Media did exactly what he wanted which was to feel powerful and in control, he also loved the attention. The Golden State Killer also loved to control, he was power driven too, he would call several victims years later, even when they had moved home. As the East Area Rapist and Original Nightstalker Joseph J DeAngelo also brought fear to the state of California.

When looking at the M.O between Zodiac and The Golden State Killer I noted the following similarities
