The Zodiac Letters & Phone Calls

Taking a look at only a few of the Zodiac Letters here as well as the Poem that was found in the Riverside Library thought to belong to Zodiac. We will also look at the Golden State Killer's Pages that were found, Mad is the Word and the Punishment Map.

First we'll take a look at San Francisco Chronicle Letter dated 26 June 1970, the Zodiac is angry as people are not wearing Zodiac Badges like he wants, he states "I promised to punish them if they didn't comply".

You can see that Zodiac craves power in this letter, he wants everyone in the Bay Area to comply with his demands. Why is it so important to him that People wear his Symbol and why the need to punish for not wearing it?

The next letter is another San Francisco Chonicle Letter dated 9th Nov 1969, Zodiac is telling the Police how angry he is with Police for telling lies about him and that he will no longer tell them when he is going to commit his murders and they will never catch him as he is too clever. The thing that strikes me in quite a few of the Zodiac Letters is the use of the word "Shall" instead of using I will he says I shall, to me "shall" is a biblical term, he also alludes to a disguise when he commits his crimes, I also find it interesting that Zodiac states his murders will look like burglaries and accidents.

Zodiac made it known to Law Enforcement he was angry with them for telling lies, in this letter he is also saying to Law Enforcement I'm going to change my M.O and you'll never know it's me, that he should use burglaries as a possibility for ways he will murder in future is also something to note.

In the EAR/ONS case files we often see an anger towards Police, often using the term Pigs as did Zodiac. In Attack 22 The Golden State Killer would say to one of his victims, "those pigs, I've never killed before, but I'm going to now, those fxxxxxx, those pigs, tell them".

I think that The Golden State Killer may of been trying to send subliminal messages to Law Enforcement over the period he committed the burglaries and rapes as EAR. There was also a few times, especially toward the end of the EAR attacks before going on to kill again that he tried to make himself sound like an african american, did he do this as a taunt to law enforcement? regarding Paul Stine's murder? possibly.

I think the similarities are there to be seen in both these killers plus the timeline is important too as Joseph J DeAngelo was studying Criminology at the time from 1969 until becoming a Police officer in 1973, at some point either in 1977 or 1978 Joseph J DeAngelo lost his employment with the Police Force and we see an escalation at this time in the violence resulting in many more rapes and murders.

Regarding the "Collecting of Slaves for his Afterlife" again we find another Religious undertone, from what I gather the investigators looked upon Zodiac as an Occultist rather than someone who was possibly Religious but I think this is down to Zodiac cleverly misdirecting constantly. Why did this killer choose the name Zodiac? to me the Zodiac is the heavens, it's astrology yes but it is everywhere, the all seeing eye as such, it has the power to change your path in life.

I think that Zodiac did give his name and I think they were possibly close to cracking it when the next ciphers showed, he made investigators keep looking in the opposite direction when I think the answer was there all along.

The Next Letter was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle dated 31st July 1969 and shows the ciphers that were sent, there is one word in each cipher letter that has references to religious subjects, it's strange how one thing leads you to another and I have no idea if this has any bearing whatsover as it is just my own thoughts and where I have been led to reading all the Police & Internet Documents on Zodiac

The first one here shows the cipher where Zodiac tells us he will be reborn in paradise, again another religious inference, we also have Eve in the Even

In this next cipher Zodiac tells us again about his collecting of slaves for his afterlife, there is the Ave in have and what is interesting is if you take a look at Ave Maria it was actually inspired by Sir Walter Scott's Poem Lady of the Lake which is all about the hunt and battle of clans, makes for interesting reading, but I do again find the religious undertone in the ciphers, Ave is the latin word for Hail, Be Well or Farewell.

The Letter sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1969 did say that his name would be in the cipher but I think he only hinted at certain things, It's possible he made mistakes early on and covered them up by sending more ciphers to misdirect.

The Zodiac and the Golden State Killer both liked their poetry which is where I find another connection, the Poem Sick of Living/Unwilling to Die the piece which says " she won't die this time"? is a strange thing to say, it would have been obvious she was dead from her wounds as they were so horrific, does that mean he wrote it before he attacked? and was in the Riverside Library or does it mean something else altogether, is she waiting for him in the afterlife?

The Poem Excitement's Crave that was sent to the San Francisco Bee in Dec 1977

All those mortal's surviving birth

Upon facing maturity, Take inventory of their worth

To prevailing society. Choosing values becomes a task;

Oneself must seek satisfaction. The selected route will unmask

Character when plans take action. Accepting some work to perform

At fixed pay, but promise for more, Is a recognized social norm,

As is decorum, seeking lore. Achieving while others lifting

Should be cause for deserving fame. Leisure tempts excitement seeking,

What's right and expected seems tame. "Jessie James" has been seen by all,

And "Son of Sam" has an author. Others now feel temptations call.

Sacramento should make an offer. To make a movie of my life

That will pay for my planned exile. Just now I' d like to add the wife

Of a Mafia lord to my file.

When I read the poem I see references that can be seen in Zodiac's Letters, Zodiac talks about his excitement in killing, how thrilling it is, "Leisure tempts excitement seeking" also referring to ordinary life as dull, "what's right and expected seems tame" when he mentions Jesse James I do wonder if it's a reference to Zodiac as he was seen by all, he used the gun like Jesse James, was he stating that Son of Sam was a copycat and he was his author? The Mafia lord may tie into an unsolved crime that I came across a few years later, it may be related or it may not, I will be listing the unsolved crimes at a later date.

There are many similarities and coincidences between Zodiac and The Golden State Killer EAR/ONS, I will upload the papers which were found believed to belong to the Golden State Killer, Mad is the Word and the Back of the Map, he uses the word Punishment and they way he writes Punishment, the T is very characteristic of a Cross, the Spiral Circle he is drawing too through the word intrigues me. That both killers should also have similar spelling mistakes is another point of interest. We can't say for sure if these documents do belong to Joseph J DeAngelo but there is a strong possibility.

There were several telephone reports by Police Operators and those who had heard Zodiac's voice and those who heard EAR's voice which seemed to show the same characteristics. In March of 1977 the East Area Rapist called Police to say " I'm the East Area Rapist then laughed". Did EAR laugh because he was really Zodiac and was still taunting Police?

The telephone call Zodiac made on the 8th July 1969 to Vallejo Police asked the operator to describe what she could about the Zodiac's voice, she said it was like he was reading or had rehearsed his speech, no accent. When she had tried to talk to him he would not stop talking and raised his voice over hers until he was finished. As he said goodbye he did it in a slow taunting manner

On 2nd December 1977 at 8pm there was a call to police from who they believed to be EAR he said " I shall commit another rape", the police operator felt that the person was reading or reciting a line, what it telling for me is that EAR possibly said Shall exactly what Zodiac would say, I shall. In January 2nd 1977 Victim 1 from a June 1976 EAR attack received a call, aside from the heavy breathing the caller said in a slow taunting voice Gonna Kill You several times, sounds much like the behaviour of Zodiac. (pg 270 Kat Winter case files)

In my next post I will reveal my most compelling piece of evidence that the Golden State Killer could just be the Zodiac. I will also go into other details that link the two as well as unsolved crimes he may be responsible for.
